A preservative used in cosmetics and some personal lubricants to prevent the growth of various microorganisms. Phenonip consists of butylparaben, propylparaben, methylparaben, phenoxyethanol and ehtylparaben.
Many of these compounds are parabens, which may cause hormonal imbalances by mimicking some of the functions of estrogen. Parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors, but because many of the aforementioned compounds are rapidly metabolized, they may move through the body too quickly to have a carcinogenic effect.
